Market leadership and rapid scale
Samsung Electronics entered the Thin-Film Transistor ("TFT") LCD market as a relatively late entrant in the early 1990s. However, through aggressive fab construction, rapid scaling, and technological advancements, it achieved leading global market share in large-scale TFT-LCD panels by the late 1990s.
Defining the flat-panel era
By the early 2000s, Samsung had become one of the world's top LCD panel suppliers, driven by innovations such as ultra-slim designs, high-refresh-rate panels, and LED-backlit LCDs.
As LCDs became increasingly commoditized and Chinese manufacturers entered the market with heavily subsidized production facilities, profit margins eroded significantly.
